Role Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and flexible individual to join our small new and growing manufacturing team.

This person will be responsible for setting up machining processes and procedures in a clean slate production site, with the support of our sub-contracted machining development partner.

They should have experience of working with machine tools with the capability to start from scratch with limited external input. They should be comfortable taking the initiative and finding creative solutions to problems while working within a multiskilled team. The person must be willing to “roll their sleeves up” and muck in to get a job done on time.

The successful candidate will be required to quickly turn their hand to a wide range of skills from machining process creation to fixture design and to pick up new responsibilities as the facility develops.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating, developing, and validating new procedures and processes for component machining, both from billet and from castings. 
  • Specifying, designing, and validating machining fixtures and special tools for part machining
  • Setting up a clean slate factory as part of a small multifunctional team. Working closely with contract machining partner in the first instance.
  • Witness and collect information from machining trials and translate this information into clear work instructions 
  • Devising and scheduling work instructions for machining staff  
  • Identifying areas of concern and risk within machining process and solving them quickly and effectively 
  • ensuring quality of delivered product through process/system control and testing.  
  • Liaising with multiple teams to ensure efficient running of machining processes.  
  • Managing machining operating run times and coordinating with shift leaders to identify potential time/cost savings.  
  • Creating of acceptance tests for each operation and troubleshooting issues arising during test. 
  • Conducting spot checks once processes are established and taking an active role in resolving any issues discovered. 
  • Initially responsible for health and safety procedures and compliance within the machining process, then responsible for handover once H&S manager recruited. 
  • Coordinating machine tool repair, calibration and service to minimise downtime.
  • Able to work cross functionally and assist with machine assembly processes as required.

Skills & Experience

We are looking for a dedicated and creative individual with some experience using one or more of these tools: 
  • Background in process or manufacturing engineering with a relevant engineering degree or apprenticeship preferrable 
  • Good knowledge of material science and machining processes of large and small machinery components 
  • Proven track record of successfully adapting to challenges and taking the lead in complex situations 
  • Previous experience of MRP/ERP systems 
  • Knowledge of QA processes and delivering quality within a production environment 
  • 3D CAD experience essential for creation of build documentation. Exact platform not relevant as training will be provided in the Creo package
  • Experience of CNC programming 
  • Knowledge of 6sigma and lean manufacturing 
  • Ability to specify machining processes from raw materials arriving on site to finished components leaving the line 
  • Ability to maintain a clear head and make decisions under pressure 
  • Experience of health and safety in an industrial environment 
  • Able to identify skills shortfalls and request assistance from other teams or additional training requirements to fill in gaps. 
  • Proficient at producing clear and concise process documents
  • Able to produce a business case for any proposed changes 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and scheduling software.
